A Guide To Wine and Glass Racks

Wine and glass racks are an essential addition to any wine drinker's home. With housing prices skyrocketing, smaller homes are becoming a way of life. Storage issues can be troublesome, but not if you are smart. Out of the box thinking habits can help increase tricky space issues, while still allowing you to create a wine lover's haven under your own roof. Wine and glass racks are the answer to space issues.

Why waste valuable cupboard space with a variety of bulky and unusually sized wine glasses? Many of today's kitchens offer fewer cupboards and more additions. It is not uncommon to have built-in garbage can cupboards or sliding spice racks.

However, these additions replace utility cupboards. While your garbage and recyclable containers are neatly stored away, there is a lack of room for foods, cans, plates, bowls, coffee mugs, and drinking glasses. Storage for wine glasses becomes an issue. Purchasing wall wine racks with glass holders is a creative way to combine storage for those oddly shaped glasses while including placement for a few bottles of wine as well, all the while being pleasing to the eye.

Wine and glass racks are available in many styles. Cabinet models, ceiling hung racks, and floor racks all exist; however, the cabinet or floor racks take up valuable floor space while ceiling hung racks can only handle a certain amount of weight.

Better options are wall wine racks with glass holders. These stylish racks are usually made of cast iron or stainless steel and mount on the wall. Models are available in wood, but they usually lack the space offered by a metal rack. Wall mounted wine racks add flair to your kitchen while providing ample wine glass and wine bottle storage.

Wall wine racks with glass holders contain seven rows of holders that allow the base of the wine glass to rest gently on the holders. The wine glasses hang upside down keeping dust and other contaminates out of the glass. Each row holds three glasses allowing up to twenty-one glasses to be stored on the wine and glass racks. Above the wine glasses is a metal-framed shelf. The shelf is capable of holding seven bottles of wine that are all safely stored on their sides. This action keeps the corks moist creating a perfectly scrumptious bottle of wine every time.

When kitchen storage is an issue, it makes sense to use the space wisely. Hanging wall mounted wine and glass racks is not only smart, but it also adds an aesthetic flair to the surroundings.

Ch Pontac Lynch - Margaux - Cru Bourgeois - "Cuvee Special"

"Imitate no one and make your own name in Margaux" is the challenge that Marie-Christine Bondon has been taking up since 1998 when she became administrator and manager of Chateau Pontac-Lynch. Nestled between Ch. Margaux and Ch. Palmer, the shared micro-climate and soil is evident in its obvious quality. This lovely red is a great discovery and an excellent value. This is the Chateaux's "Cuvee Special" from the 2003 vintage. A blend of 40% Cabernet s., 30% Cabernet f., 20% Merlot, and 10% Petit verdot (the majority of the regular Cuvee is made with Merlot) this wine is barreled for 1 year in 70% new French Oak barrels instead of 40% new oak barrels for the regular cuvee. Only 500 cases of this wine were made and the winery hand-harvested the grapes and then employed a rigorous examination process of the grapes inside the winery to make sure only the best made it into the crush. The new oak gives the 2003 Cuvee Special a very smoky nose to compliment the outstanding depth of fruit on both the nose and palate. From a great vintage, this wine will easily last 15-20 years and possibly longer. PONN03 PONN03

Cooking With Wine

Wine is often enjoyed as a drink among friends, but did you ever notice that wines enjoyed at the table are just as often the ingredients of major recipes? When did this happen or were we all too warm and fuzzy to even notice? Explore wine as a flavoring for holiday cooking and enter a brave and scrumptious new world. You might even want to re-visit at other times of the year as well.

Although there are many wonderful spices and seasonings available throughout the culinary cosmos, there is truly nothing that intensifies and enhances the flavor of food as much as wine does. Apart from the virtues of taste that we all enjoy, wine releases flavors in food that are unique. However, there are some things to watch for while cooking with it, and none of them involve drinking too much or finding someone to drive you home.

Probably the most important rule of thumb is never to cook with a wine you would not drink. Most cooking wines on the market today are truly terrible, and as such can only add a terrible flavor to whatever you are preparing. If it tastes like vinegar in the bottle, it will introduce the same flavor to your casserole. (Consider that old expression about quacking like a duck, walking like a duck and looking like a duck.) Buy a nice bottle (not too cheap and not too costly) and always be aware that whatever flavor the wine has will be transported to your dish.

It's also important to know that when wine is used as flavoring it should simmer with the recipe because it takes time for the flavor to take hold. You should also wait about ten minutes after adding an initial dose and taste before adding any more. The flavor of any wine can overpower the best of dishes quite easily. If added late in the cooking process, it can also impart a harsh taste. Also, do not use aluminum or cast-iron pans when cooking anything with wine. Stick with enamel and other non-reactive cookware. Generally speaking, when a recipe calls for water, it can be replaced with the same amount of wine. A tablespoon or two can also enhance the flavors of gravies, oils and marinades.

Red or white is the eternal question revolving around the wine mulberry bush. Some say red wine with meat and white with fish and some say, well, other things. Don't worry about what others say or about what tradition dictates is proper and fitting for this time of year. Let your own tastebuds be your guide.

Ch Palmer Margaux 3rd Cru

This vinyard, named after a British general who entered Bordeaux with his army in 1814 and subsequently bought the estate, is one of Bordeaux' greatest wines. This is a gloriously opulent, low acid, fleshy Palmer that will be attractive early and will keep well. Dark ruby/purple colored, with smoky, toasty new oak with decent concentration, some noticeable tannins with gobs of jammy cherry fruit, and floral and chocolate nuances, this wine is plump yet elegant.
