The Benefits Of Wine On Your Health

How did wine come into being? Thousands of years ago, an unknown person must have accidentally let some sweet fruit juice to ferment. May be this was grape, figs or the juice of dates. This led to the fermentation of sugar present in the juice and thus wine came into existence. Wine has become a common beverage and is consumed by many cultures today. In many countries people drink wine with their food, and this is one reason perhaps why heart disease is much lower in European countries.

The idea that wine is good for health is not something new. The father of medicine, Hippocrates has written about the advantages and qualities of wine. Modern day research shows that people consuming wine daily with meals are not prone to heart diseases.

There are two benefits of wine on health. The content of alcohol in wine, irrespective of its color being red or white protects the heart and the phytochemicals from the grape skin present in the wine also protects you from heart diseases. Due to these two advantages wine is considered to be a good drink when compared to other alcoholic beverages. Whether it an alcoholic beverage or wine, controlling consumption is very essential. Too much of any drink, including wine, is not too good.

Wine is very beneficial to the heart as it contains flavonoids. Flavonoids are derived from grape skins and are phytochemicals. Red wine is made by fermenting grapes with their skins and during the process flavonoids from the skin leak into the wine. The wine gets its flavor and color by this process. Red wine has flavonoids and white wine does not because the skin of the grapes is removed while making white wine and hence the content of flavonoids in white wine is very low. Flavonoids protect the LDLs and prevent blood clots. Though in purple and red grapes flavonoids are present in large quantities, only one third of it leaks into the wine.

The Wisconsin University after a study has concluded that flavonoids present in red wine prevent the blood platelets from getting sticky and hence prevent blood clots and decrease the risk of getting a heart attack. Studies reveal that red wine is good for health provided it is consumed with meals. The amount and the time that wine is consumed are very important in how flavonoids and alcohol affect heart health. In Italy and France heart diseases are comparatively low. People start drinking wine from a very early age and drunkenness is almost nonexistent as people drink moderately. People find it pleasurable to sip wine leisurely during meals.

However, if one drinks an entire bottle of wine all at once and then divides it by seven and says that he is a ?moderate? drinker over the week he is missing a point here. There must be moderation all the time. Alcohol including red wine consumption comes with a certain amount of risk, so before you buy any be cautious.

Drinking regularly may damage mental function and also affect your memory. People who have more than four to five drinks a day become prone to hypertension, which may cause kidney failure, heart attacks and diseases that are related to the liver. You are more prone to accidents at work and road accidents if you have no control over the alcohol you consume.

Excessive drinking among women will increase the risk of breast cancer and drinking is often related to heart diseases. Women must talk to their physicians about cancer risks before they choose to consume alcohol on a daily basis, and they should remember to drink moderately.

Worcester Travel Guide in the Winelands - South Africa

The town of Worcester in South Africa was founded in 1822. The town today is mainly the service centre for the surrounding wine and fruit growing areas in the Breede River Valley. Worcester lies at the N1 freeway connecting Cape Town and Johannesburg and is an ideal place for a stopover, since it has some interesting tourist attractions to offer.

At the Kleinplasie open-air museum one can gain an insight into the living conditions of the first settlers. A farm from the 18th century, a hut of the Trekboers and a Khoikhoi camp have been rebuilt and furnished true to detail. Actors in historical dresses reinvoke the rural life of the old days. Visitors can watch how they manufactured soap, rolled tobacco, forged horseshoes, milled wheat, spun wool and much more.

To the wine lover, Worcester offers a big Wine Tasting Centre, where one can savor the excellent Breede River wines. Definitely worth a visit is the KWV Brandy Cellar, where one can gain an insight into art of brandy distillation.

Another attraction is the Karoo National Botanical Garden, about one kilometer north of Worcester. In this 144 hectare semi-desert nature reserve one can find a whole spectrum of Karoo plants.

Glider-flying enthusiasts find the only glider flying airfield in the Cape in Worcester. The Cape Gliding Club owns a whole range of one or two-seater glider planes, a towing aircraft and a tarred runway. Flying activities are usually limited to the weekends only. Visitors are welcome and can, under the supervision of a teacher, try flying themselves. Thermal winds and weather conditions in the Breede River Valley are excellent most of the year.

Worcester lies on the main route to and from Cape Town, Johannesburg and Port Elizabeth. With its wide range of services and commercial facilities, it has become the business and shopping centre for the entire valley and surrounding towns.

Kleinplasie:

The Complex (next to the Robertson Road) comprises the agricultural showground's, an Open Air Living Museum, restaurant and wine cellar, as well as the Reptile World.

The unique open air museum depicts the lifestyle of the early pioneer farmers. Throughout the year a variety of activities are presented.

Karoo National Botanical Garden:

This jewel of a garden with 144ha of natural semi-desert vegetation and 10ha of landscaped gardens, features the unique plants of the drier parts of the country. Its greenhouse boast world famous collections of stone plants.

Brandy Route:

During the 325th brandy producing year in South Africa in 1997, the world's first Brandy Route was introduced, causing a stir amongst the world media. Public awareness was roused and brandy-lovers set about finding out more about the production and finer side of this noble fruit of the vine, by visiting the cellars along the Brandy Route.

The KWV Cellar, the largest of its kind in the world, is one of eight cellars on the Brandy Route. It's uniqueness lies in the 120 Woudberg potstills, huge maturation cellar and demonstrations of the ancient craft of barrel-making by the coopers.

The Olof Bergh Solera Cellar, at Goudine, is the other cellar in the Worcester region. Small but prolific, it accommodates 22 Woudberg copper potstills, similiar to those used in Cognac, France, for the distillation of high quality colombar wines. It is the only cellar in South Africa to practice the famous Spanish Solera method of maturation and blending.

Nuwe Hoop Centre for the Hearing Impaired:

Worcester was laid out according to a definite plan with parallel streets. This enables the visitor to take an easy walk through town and visit some prime examples of early architecture. Brochures are available at the Tourism Bureau.

I Love Italian Wine and Food - The Apulia Region

If you are looking for fine Italian wine and food, consider the Apulia region of southern Italy. You may find a bargain, and I hope that you'll have fun on this fact-filled wine education tour.

Apulia is the heel of the Italian boot. It is located in the southeast corner of Italy on the Adriatic and Ionian Seas. Apulia was frequently invaded by the ancient Greeks and Romans. Among its many rulers were the Byzantines, Goths, Lombards, Normans, Spaniards, and Turks. Its moment of greatest glory was in the Holy Roman Empire of the 13th Century, when majestic Romanesque cathedrals and palaces were built.

When the Phoenicians and Greeks first arrived in Apulia they found native people living from farming. Apulia produces nearly half of the olive oil in Italy. Other major agricultural products include grain, fava beans, vegetables, pasta and rice, seafood and fish, cheese, and meat, especially lamb and kid. The region has some industry, in particular chemicals, petrochemicals, iron, and steel.

Apulia's administrative center is Bari, the biggest city in southern Italy, whose population is slightly more than 325 thousand. Bari is a university city, with a historic old town. Taranto and Brindisi are important ports.

Apulia devotes about 260 thousand acres to grapevines, it ranks 2nd among the 20 Italian regions. Its total annual wine production is about 191 million gallons, also giving it a 2nd place. About 7o% of the wine production is red or ros? (only a little ros?), leaving 30% for white. The region produces 25 DOC wines. DOC stands for Denominazione di Origine Controllata, which may be translated as Denomination of Controlled Origin, presumably a high-quality wine. Less than 4% of Apulia wine carries the DOC designation. Apulia is home to over three dozen major and secondary grape varieties, a few more red than white.

Widely grown international white grape varieties include Chardonnay. Italian versions of international varieties include Trebbiano Toscano and Malvasia Blanco. The best known strictly Italian white varieties are Bombino Bianco, which appears in eight DOC wines, and Verdeca.

Widely grown international or somewhat international red varieties include Primitivo, a close relative of Zinfandel, and Sangiovese, an Italian variety found increasingly elsewhere, for example in California. The best known strictly Italian red varieties are Negroamaro, found in eleven DOC wines, and Uva di Troia.

Before reviewing the Apulia wine and cheese that we were lucky enough to purchase at a local wine store and a local Italian food store, here are a few suggestions of what to eat with indigenous wines when touring this beautiful region.
Start with 'ncapriata, also known as Favi e Fogghi, a Fava Bean Puree with Vegetables.
Then try Pepata di Cozze al Limone, Peppery Mussels with Lemon.
For dessert indulge yourself with Frittelle di Ricotta, Ricotta Fritters.

Azienda Vinicola Rivera Spa 'Castel del Monte' Ros? 11.5% alcohol about $8

Some say that Castel del Monte, named for a 13th Century castle, is the best-known appellation in Apulia. Of course, best known does not necessarily mean best. This particular bottle was from Bombino Nero grapes, whose unusual pyramidal form remind one of a child (Bombino or Bambino) with outstretched arms.

I'll start by quoting the marketing materials. "...After soft processing of the grapes the must macerates with the skins for 15-18 hours in stainless steel vats. It is a fruity, well-balanced and dry ros? that perfectly complements appetizers, light soups, fish and white meats. Well-chilled it is a great aperitif."

And now for my comments. I first tried this wine with an omelet containing red onions, Portabello mushrooms, and non-imported Provolone cheese. The wine was mildly acidic and refreshing, and brought out the onion's sweetness. It was a summer wine, you'd know it was a ros? without seeing it. On the other hand, it was very short.

My next tasting was with chicken meat balls and green beans amandine. While the wine was pleasantly acidic, once again it was quite fleeting and almost overpowered by mild food. This is one of the few wines that I prefer without food. It usually did not add anything to the food.

Caciocavallo Silano is a stringy semi-hard cheese produced in Apulia and neighboring regions of southern Italy. It's made from cow's milk aged for at least fifteen days. The cheese's mild nutty flavor was enhanced by the wine. I had the same experience when tasting this wine with a Pecorino Sardo, reviewed in greater depth in my article "I Love Italian Wine and Food - The Sardinia Region" in this series. In conclusion, the wine went better with cheese than with eggs or meat.

Final verdict, I don't think that I'll buy this wine again. The competition is too great, even at the $8 price point.
